Brief Intro and Question re Keyword searching

Hi all

I am just getting into the affiliate game and expect to have a couple of sites up in the next month. To start with I will create a mix of US and locally based sites given that there are not a great lot of affiliates here.

A question for those of you who do have NZ affiliate sites.
What is your advice regarding keyword finding for NZ traffic? The usual services advertised on the web such as Wordtracker do not provide NZ info so the only real option here is to use Hitwise, but I have heard they are quite expensive (anyone know exact costs?)

Are there other channels I have not thought of?

I use the Yahoo/Overture tools to ID the search phrases actually used in the UK and also in Australia. It's free and provides you with details lits of search phrases used during the last 30 days and quantifies each search phrases.

Once I have done the search on the UK site I then cross check it with the Australian site. I use this strategy because the terminology used in the UK is quite similar to here, and the market demand for product in Australia is quite similar to here.

Having said all that, I am really minimising the AM work I do here in NZ. Having a US or UK site, hosted in the US or UK respectively, using US or UK merchants, and targetting the buying public in those coutries produces a much better income.

As I said in another posting recently, while NZ merchants insist on trying to use el'cheapo Affiliate Programs hosted on their own servers instead of using a professional Affiliate Network, I have little or no faith in the sales being tracked properly. You can bust your backside producing all the traffic under the sun for them, but then you don't get paid, either because the sale was not tracked properly, or because the merchant is dodgy and simply does not want to pay you. By using a professional Affiliate Network all of those problems disappear and both the merchant and the Affiliate Network are much more successful.

Thanmks for the tip Nick.

I have been using the overture tool but didn;t realise there was a specific site for Australia.

Have you got any affiliate sites focussed on Australia?
I am looking there as well but was wondering whether it is a problem that you can't (easily) buy domains.

No I have not got any sites targetting Australia yet, but that is certainly one of the next projects on the list - just so many opportunities everywhere I look and never enough time.

I know what you mean about the domains. I had to persuade a friend of mine in Australia who is in the business to let me "borrow" his ABN number to buy a couple - and it are these that I will use for sites over there. I am hoping that now I have an account set up that it will let me buy more - in fact there is a business opportunity in itself. I don't know any other country in the world that has set up such protective measures set up to guard their domains.

Having said that the way around it is to buy a com or .net and host it in Australia. That will overcome the geotargetting problems that Google especially, is presenting us all with. But it certainly does make the domains more valuable.
